Outdoor Pest prevention franchise targets statewide development in the Great Lakes State due to growing success of local operators
There is nothing better for Midwesterners than a summer on the water in Michigan. This state serves as a great escape for many, and a place to leave stress and city life behind in exchange for the great outdoors.
However, there is no bigger damper on a day outside than a swarm of mosquitoes and the bothersome bites that follow.
As a Michigan resident and Mosquito Joe franchisee, Greg VanDeusen has experienced this issue firsthand. This is why, upon his search for a new business opportunity with partner Tom Rosenhagen in 2016, the Virginia Beach-based mobile mosquito prevention franchise Mosquito Joe caught his eye.
“We were looking for additional ways to grow our portfolio and decided the mosquito control industry would be an interesting field to explore,” VanDeusen said. “The more we researched the industry, the brand’s effectiveness and its long-term potential, the more it sounded like a fun concept that would be profitable and beneficial to a lot of people in our area.”
VanDeusen and Rosenhagen eventually decided to sign on with the brand, and with that, Mosquito Joe of West Michigan was born. They began officially serving customers in May of 2016 with the hope of creating a mosquito, flea and tick free spring and summer for families and businesses in Greater Grand Rapids, Byron Center, Rockford, Ada, Cascade and Holland.
Without much expectation for how the brand would be received as one of the first operators in the state, Mosquito Joe of West Michigan was extremely successful in its first season. In preparation for this year’s looming buggy season, VanDeusen is hoping to not only have many return customers, but a lot of new clients, too.
“Last year was our first year in business and we received extremely positive response and feedback from customers. I even had one person reach out recently and mention that this was the first time in 11 years that she was able to enjoy the summer outdoors,” VanDeusen said.
Due to similar success statewide, Mosquito Joe has plans to expand its coverage throughout Michigan in 2017. Target growth areas include Kalamazoo, Battle Creek, Lansing, Flint, Bay City, Midland and Traverse City.
“We feel that Michigan is the perfect state in which to continue our growth across the Midwest,” Mosquito Joe CEO Kevin Wilson said. “The damp, humid weather and proximity to water makes it a breeding ground for mosquitoes, and we hope to continue making outside fun again for Michigan residents.”
In addition to the five operating Mosquito Joe franchises in Michigan, the brand is looking to partner with qualified franchisees who, like VanDeusen, have an understanding for the local area demographics. The average investment range for Mosquito Joe is $66,600 - $122,500.
